Abstract:
Using L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer and Coh-Metrix, this study investigates syntactic complexity and its correlation with text readability and grade levels in 200 compositions written by college students in China and the U.S. to comparatively study the questions: Is there a significant difference between L1 and L2 compositions in the aspect of syntactic complexity? And is there a significant correlation between syntactic complexity in the two sample groups and the corresponding text readability and grade levels? The results indicate that: (1) L1 compositions manifest more syntactic complexity as well as higher readability and grade levels than L2 compositions; (2) readability and grade levels increase with syntactic complexity. Therefore, this study concludes that it is necessary to implement students’ awareness and application of syntactic complexity for better writing quality.
