Abstract:
The production effect refers to the phenomena that reading a word aloud leads to better memory for the learned item, compared with silent reading. Previous studies have investigated its boundary conditions, influencing factors and formation mechanism, and distinctiveness hypothesis, attention distribution hypothesis and items losses and gains hypothesis have explained the formation of the effects from the perspective of processing, distribution of attention, memory losses and gains respectively. This paper, thus, suggests that further researches are expected to explore the boundary conditions of the effect, impacts of production on the metacognitive process, and applications of production effect.
